All our lives, we hear the old clichéd mantra – “Be content with what you have”. And that’s not a bad thing to hear- if you were jealous of someone’s fame or success, or if you were being greedy for more when you have enough. I mean, sure, I have a roof over my head and food to put in my mouth and all that.
But what if that isn’t enough?
It’s not the placard carriers protesting on the streets who are the dangerous ones. It’s those who don’t want their comfortable existences threatened, and think that doing nothing will fix everything. It’s those who refuse to push forward, and fully furnish their comfort zones for a long stay.
I’m not trying to sound ungrateful, but I don’t want just a cushy life in my comfort zone, being content with what I see around me. I’d rather be a blathering idiot by the roadside, screaming my beliefs to the searing sun, than sitting down and giving up on ‘doing’ because I’m trying to be content.
That is the trouble with comfort zones, isn’t it? For a while they seem like good rest stops on your journey, but eventually you become convinced that there is no need to continue, and that there is nothing worthwhile in going on. And so you stay. Catatonic.
Surely you’re better than that?
This isn’t supposed to be a New Year resolution kick-start, neither is it supposed to be a political battle cry. It’s simply a pull. A hand dragging you off your couch to go and do and be. A flip of the light switch in your mind. An expectation that you’ll see that being happy with the way things are is not always a good thing.
I don’t know about you, but I’d rather go out in a blaze of light than a withering, lazy slowness.
