THE DELETERIOUS EFFECTS OF MICROWAVE OVENS

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 90% of American households owned a microwave oven in 1997. This trend is becoming the case in many parts of the world, especially in the cities and urban areas. . Percy Spencer invented the first microwave oven after World War II from radar technology developed during the war, named the “Radarange”, it was first sold in 1946.

Microwave ovens have served as efficient and convenient stewards to people worldwide. Microwaves make food preparation quick, frozen foods can be defrosted easily and less energy is consumed during the cooking process in ovens. Research has shown that the average American man finds it impossible to do without microwave ovens. Indeed these ovens are viewed to be so beneficial to man.

This “time saving” technology, used by many, continues to attract growth in demand worldwide, yet I question it’s benefit against it’s possible harm to humanity. I question the adverse impact on the microwave oven to man’s health. As we all know, ‘health is wealth’. In Dr. Lots Lee’s book,” Effects of Microwave Radiation”, she makes it clear that every microwave leaks electromagnetic radiation which harms food and converts substances cooked in it to dangerous organ-toxic and carcinogenic products. Thereby causing microwave sicknesses such as; lymphatic disorder, increased rate of cancer cell formation, increased rate of stomach and intestinal cancers and so on. Because of all the detrimental effects on man’s health, in 1976, the Soviet Union banned the use of microwave ovens. Although many people still support the fact that these ovens are not harmful to man’s health if they are used properly, I strongly believe that these ovens should be eliminated from the world because the world will be better off without them. There will be less cases of cancer caused by these ovens.

In addition to the above mentioned negative effect, microwaves do not enable foods to be cooked properly and results in various intestinal diseases like; gastrointestinal diseases because the foods eaten are not well prepared. Elimination of microwaves would reduce the rate at which people spend their lives in the hospital for treatment.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has constantly emphasized the need for vitamins in the body. These vitamins act as body soldiers who fight against diseases. The continuous use of microwaves most times leads to the loss of these vitamins in foods. People who depend on the use of microwaves trade beneficial vitamins for fast cooked foods and this eventually leads to low vitamins in the body which would lead to vulnerability of the body system to diseases. For this reason, microwaves should be eliminated.

While many other life saving and time saving technology including interventions in health all have some areas of disadvantage, especially if misused, I chose to eliminate the microwave because it is not an intervention that man cannot live without. If man can live without one more potential environmental and health hazard, I vote for the elimination of the microwave oven.
